Whole Story

Can you tell me another story of a time you used technology and it just didn't work for you?

Last year I decided I wanted each kid to come out of kindergarten with a presentation about themselves. So during their superstar week, my goal was to help them create a HyperStudio project, but we don't have that program and I was told that I couldn't get it. I had to use PowerPoint instead and it doesn't work for kindergartners. There's no fun, colorful pictures...it's all pretty blah. So I ended up making a template and then sitting with them to fill in, but I just don't... My goal had been that they would learn how to make colors, how to find the picture that they wanted to. Obviously, not all of them [were skilled at using computers], but there were enough of them that had used computers at home...I wanted them to see some uses besides playing games. So I tried this.

The PowerPoint program...just not intuitive for kindergartners?

It's not user-friendly at all for little ones. They were way too dependent on me. I had planned to help them get going on a page and then let them do the next couple by themselves.

Did the students seem to be excited to try to use it or was it...?

Mostly they were excited...I let them print them off afterward and decorate them, so they ended up with a book, too. Mostly they were excited about the book. They really didn't care.

So it sort of worked out in a different way?

Yes.

OK. Those are great stories. Thank you very much.
